Monument to Ramón del Valle-Inclán

Vilanova de Arousa (1866) – Santiago de Compostela (1936)

Poet, novelist and theatre writer, he was part of the Spanish literary Modernism and its “Generation of ‘98”. The aesthetics and perfection of his work, with a careful choice of the language, are remarkable. From Modernism he started to reflect the grotesque reality of Spanish society using tragic and sarcastic characters in his dramas. This aesthetics is known as 'theatre of the grotesque' and Valle-Inclán is the creator. There is a bench with the inscription: 'A Don Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. 1866-1936. A Universidade e Concello de Compostela. Santiago 5 de xaneiro 1999' ('To Mr. Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. 1866-1936. The University and the City Council of Santiago de Compostela. Santiago, 5 January, 1999'). The bronze statue is a work by the sculptor César Lombera (Santiago de Compostela 1999).
