Lagerstroemia indica L.

Name justification:
Linnaeus dedicated this botanic genus to his compatriot Magnus von Lagerstroem (1696-1759), at that time president of the Swedish East India Company.
Indica refers to India, from where it comes.

Description: Small tree
Leaf: Decidious Broad Entire

Origin and distribution:
It comes from Japan, China, India, East India and North of Australia. It was introduced in Europe as an ornamental plant by the middle of the 18th century.

Location in the garden:
In its origin area it loses its leaves during the dry season, whereas in Spain, they fall in winter. There is only one specimen. It is located next to the Pais Lapido Fountain.
